| The Grace Hospital Medical Staff recently honored four patient caregivers with its Patient/Physician Attentiveness Award. Given quarterly, the award recognizes and rewards individuals who exhibit outstanding patient care. Award recipients were Debbie Miller, Linda Morton, Brenda Smith and Debra Waddell.
Debbie Miller, RN was nominated by Edward Plyler, MD who described her as “compassionate, caring and a team player.” Miller began her career at Grace Hospital in 1978 as a cashier in the accounting department. In 1991, she completed the nursing program at Western Piedmont Community College and in 1995 graduated from Western Carolina University. Miller lives in Morganton with her husband Dallas.
Alfred W. Hamer, MD and Walter H. Hall, MD nominated Linda Morton, RN. Morton was described as “being dedicated, excellent work performance, and an excellent nurse manager with strong leadership skills.” Morton began her nursing career at Grace Hospital in 1978 as a nursing assistant. In 1980, she completed the nursing program at Western Piedmont Community College and in 2000 became the nurse manager for the Family Center at Grace Hospital. Morton lives in Oak Hill with her husband Bob and their three daughters, Josie, Kiley and Brittany.
Brenda Smith, RN was nominated by Barbara Nagy, MD who described her as “a strong nurse with excellent clinical skills, a positive attitude and great teacher for student nurses.” Smith began her nursing career at Grace Hospital in 1968 after graduating from the Davis Hospital School of Nursing in Statesville, NC. Smith lives in Morganton with her husband James Edward and is the mother of two sons, Stephen and Bryan. Smith also has a grandson, Hunter.
Dorwyn Croom, MD, nominated Debra Waddell, BSMT, for the patient/physician attentiveness award and described her as a “diligent and devoted employee, dedicated to the best possible patient care.” Waddell began her career at Grace Hospital in 1981 after receiving her associate degree in medical laboratory technology from Western Piedmont Community College. In 1989, she graduated Summa Cum Laude from Western Carolina University with a bachelor degree in medical technology. In 1997, she was promoted to Lab Supervisor at Grace Hospital. Waddell lives in Morganton with her husband David and step-son Nathaniel.
The nominating physicians and John H. Giles, MD, Grace Hospital Medical Staff Secretary/Treasurer, presented each recipient with a certificate and a check.
