| The Blue Ridge HealthCare Cancer Care Centers - in conjunction with First Baptist Church of Morganton's Deaf Mission and Morganton Regional Resource Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing - will be offering a breast health program for the deaf and hard of hearing on Saturday, February 22 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall of the First Baptist Church of Morganton. Jan Hollar, Cancer Services Coordinator for Blue Ridge HealthCare Cancer Centers and Eddy Banaszewski, RN at the Valdese Cancer Center will lead the program.
Program participants will learn the three important steps to the early detection of breast cancer: breast-self exam, clinical breast exam and mammography. Participants will also learn the proper technique for performing self-breast exam. ·All women over the age of 20 should perform a Breast-Self Exam monthly. ·A Clinical Breast Exam is performed by a health care professional and is recommended for all women over the age of 20. This type of exam should be completed every three years for women between the ages of 20 and 39 and yearly for women age 40 and over. ·A mammogram is a type of x-ray taken of the breast to help detect any abnormalities. Women age 40 and over should have a mammogram every year. Women who have a family history of breast cancer should talk to their doctor about when to begin their mammography screening.
