| In observance of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month the Blue Ridge HealthCare Cancer Care Centers Breast Cancer Action Team has partnered with the Burke County Council for Women to distribute breast-self exam kits in October through the Buddy Check program.
The Buddy Check program is designed to help remind women to perform their monthly breast-self examinations. The program is simple, pick someone you care about - mom, friend, co-worker, sister or daughter and remind them to perform their monthly breast-self exam and in turn, they remind you. The two of you are in it together - you are both forming a habit that could save your lives! The Buddy Check program makes remembering and practicing the rules of good breast health a little easier. Monthly exams, combined with yearly check-ups by a health care professional and mammograms, can save the lives of thousands of women each year.
The Buddy Check program kit includes: a plastic breast-self exam shower card which offers a step by step guide to proper breast-self exams, pink ribbon stickers for your calendar to help remind yourself to perform your monthly breast-self exam and a variety of informational materials on breast cancer.
Check with your buddy each month to be sure that she did her breast-self exam and use the birthday sticker that is provided in the kit to remind yourself to have a health care professional examine your breast each year and discuss the need for a mammogram. If you would like a free Buddy Check program kit or for additional information on breast cancer programs please, contact Jan Hollar, Cancer Care Services Coordinator at 580-6703.
