The most frightening thing is not the possibility of cancer. It’s the not knowing, not understanding what is happening to one’s own body. Even the most life-threatening situations are less terrifying when people understand what they are facing.

Our goal for the cancer support program is to help people with cancer to be as comfortable as possible in a physical, emotional, and/or spiritual sense, as they go through their illness. Making you and/or your family aware of cancer-related support groups or resources in the community is part of our program. Below is a list of some of our scheduled programs throughout the year. We invite you to take part in these FREE programs provided by Blue Ridge HealthCare Cancer Center.

Restorative Yoga Classes are offered every Tuesday at Phifer Wellness Center, 11:30am - 12:30pm. Yoga is an ancient practice of integrating body, breath, and mind. Practicing yoga can help ease symptoms, give you more energy, calm your mind, and give you tools to reduce stress. Participants will need to wear something comfortable and bring a big towel to sit on.

The Look Good Feel Better Program is a free program to help women undergoing cancer treatment learn to cope with appearance related side effects of treatment and regain a sense of self confidence and control over their lives. Patients learn how to disguise hair loss using various accessories and enhance their appearance using makeup techniques. Each participant is given complementary cosmetics and skin care products. Pre-registration is required by calling Rhonda Crowe at 438-4643. This group meets the third Monday of each month at the Cancer Center at Valdese Hospital.

Financial Concerns - Cancer poses a heavy economic burden on both patients and their families. For many people, a portion of medical expenses will be paid for by their insurance. For individuals who are underinsured or uninsured, and need financial assistance, there are resources available to you. To learn more about these resources, please ask for a referral to the Cancer Center Financial Counselor.

Information and Education - BRHC Cancer Care serves as a resource for information pertaining to all types of cancer, treatment and the emotional impact of living with cancer. Free brochures, videos, books and audiotapes can be checked out of the cancer resource center. A computer is also available which gives patients access to information on the internet.
